Richard Turley is an independent historian who served twenty-two years as the managing director of the Church’s Historical Department, twelve concurrent years as managing director of the Family History Department, eight years as Assistant Church Historian and Recorder, and four years as managing director of the Public Affairs and Church Communication Departments. He has published books on the Mountain Meadows Massacre, the Mark Hofmann forgeries, and, most relevant to today’s discussion, the 2021 biography of Dallin H. Oaks, In the Hands of the Lord.
